Charity Hospital
I made a third trip recently and was surprised the remaining structures were still there. I fully expected a brand new housing complex built on the property by now. I was happy to see the remnants still there. I snapped a few pics to update the file.
I've now made two trips here. This time though, a large chunk of the woods have been replaced by an apartment community. Also, there has been some clearing near the hospital making me think they're going to tear it down soon. I am glad I got here when I did. Either way I don't think it will standing much longer. In one of the pics below you can see the brick is separating from the structure. I was on the third floor at that time. I didn't hang around for very long!
In the heart of Laurel, Mississippi, the skeletal remains of the South Mississippi Charity Hospital stand as a haunting testament to time's inexorable march. Established in 1917, this institution was once a beacon of hope and healing, serving the community for 72 years until it shut its doors in 1989. After its closure, the hospital was left to the mercy of nature and neglect, its once-bustling corridors and wards succumbing to decay.
A significant fire in the early 2000s marked a dramatic chapter in the hospital's decline, reducing much of the structure to charred remnants. What remains is a ghostly silhouette of its former self, with nature gradually reclaiming the space through vines and trees, while the elements continue to erode the structure. The building's decay has been further etched by vandalism, weather, and the passage of time, leaving behind an eerie landscape of peeling paint, shattered windows, and crumbling brickwork.
The Charity Hospital has become a poignant symbol of both the town's history and the transience of human endeavor. It's reputed to be one of Mississippi's most spine-chilling abandoned sites, with local folklore whispering tales of spectral nurses and patients still wandering its halls. These stories add layers of mystique and melancholy to the site, drawing urban explorers, photographers, and paranormal enthusiasts alike.
For those daring enough to venture into its ruins, the hospital offers a stark reminder of the fragility of institutions we often take for granted. Yet, it also serves as a historical marker, encapsulating the stories of countless lives touched by its presence over nearly a century. The South Mississippi Charity Hospital in Laurel, now in ruins, stands not just as a relic of medical history but as a silent witness to the cycles of life, care, and abandonment in small-town America.
