Antioch

The Antioch School in Blue Mountain, Mississippi, located at the crossroads of Highway 15 and County Road 829 in Tippah County, opened in the 1930s as the Antioch Colored School, a vital educational hub for African American students during segregation. Rebuilt in 1948 as a four-room schoolhouse, it served the rural community until its closure in the late 20th century, when students were consolidated into larger districts. Adjacent to the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, rebuilt in 1964 after a fire tied to civil rights tensions, the school was a cornerstone of local heritage. Designated a Mississippi Historic Landmark, it is now undergoing restoration to preserve its legacy as a community and cultural center. Its weathered exterior, still standing amid ongoing remodeling, draws explorers to capture its enduring, haunting charm, a testament to Blue Mountain’s resilient past.
