Casino in the Woods

Named in 1859 after Feyton Mhoon, an African-American known for guiding riverboats with a lighthouse lantern, Mhoon Landing was a key transfer point for goods to Austin. It later became a Red Cross hub during the 1927 Mississippi Flood. Due to frequent flooding, the land was cheap and underused until 1992 when "Splash" casino opened, marking it as Northern Mississippi's first casino. Its success was brief; by 1995, competition from larger casinos in Tunica Resorts led to its decline, with all original casinos either moving or closing. An attempt to revive the area with "Splash Back Casino" in 2004 failed, and the site was eventually dismantled in 2012.
