S.S. United States

The SS United States, a legendary American ocean liner, was launched in 1952 as a masterpiece of design and speed. Crafted by William Francis Gibbs for the United States Lines, it claimed the Blue Riband on its maiden voyage, crossing the Atlantic in a record-breaking 3 days, 10 hours, and 40 minutes—a feat unmatched by any similar ship. Boasting a top speed over 38 knots, it epitomized American postwar ingenuity, serving as a luxurious passenger liner and a Cold War-ready troopship. Over its 17-year service, it ferried notable figures, celebrities, and immigrants until its retirement in 1969, overshadowed by the advent of jet travel. After years of disuse and shifting ownership, primarily docked in Philadelphia, the ship was relocated to Mobile, Alabama. In 2025, with efforts to preserve it falling through, the SS United States faces its final chapter, slated for sinking to be used as a reef—a poignant farewell to a maritime icon.
